One of the surest ways of promoting an enhanced and sustained agriculture program in any Liberian community is through the full involvement and active participation of the young people. And one way to enlist youth participation is by incorporating an agricultural program into their respective schools. In time past, schools in Liberia taught Agriculture as part of the required academic curriculum for the junior and senior high students (6 -12grades). As part of the agriculture program, students in these classes cultivated parcel of farmland for demonstration (practical) purposes. Students were required to demonstrate lessons learned in their agriculture classes by planting and growing crops. By so doing, products from these students’ farms supplemented their dietary needs while surplus from the farms were sold and funds generated were directed to funding other student projects.

It is with the desire to reintroduce this practice within the Liberian school system that Global Front Foundation seeks partnership for the implementation of a Youth Empowerment through Agriculture Production Project as a pilot in a select number of schools in Bong and Nimba County.

You can help buy the necessary tools needed to implement this youth project by donating to this project.

Employ

Empowerment Program for Low and Ordinary Yielding (EMPLOY) is in the process of engaging in micro-loan programs with the goal of providing savings and loans to the vulnerable poor in Liberia. The idea of establishing this program came about through Jill McClure, an American who visited Liberia in January 2008 after distributing money, medication, relief items to orphans at the God’s Children Orphanage home and the visitation of several communities in the Jamaica Road area on Bushrod Island. With so much passion to make a difference in Liberia and her contribution to the economic recovery program and poverty reduction initiated by other partners of Liberia, through Moses S. Forkpah Jr. (LIBERIAN), they developed this program to promote grassroots economic development in Liberia by providing loans to local entrepreneurs to rebuild or develop local business enterprises. Due to high interest rates and restrictions on loan recipients, the formal banks in Liberia are not able to offer the poor traditional banking services. These micro-entrepreneurs will be trained to have the necessary skills, experience and initiative to manage their own business. EMPLOY aims at enabling/empowering the vulnerable to improve the quality of life of families within Liberia through credit and saving. Moses is very much about rebuilding relationships first and equipping families with what they need in order to qualify for a small loan. He is well respected in his community and has many connections throughout Monrovia.

January 22, 2009 Update:
  • Amount given out to clients was in the tune of USD 70 per client. Thirty one (31) clients benefited from this loan.
  • EMPLOY’S Lending program has three cycles of solidarity group lending. For the first cycle, it covers repayment plan for 4 months.
  • Everything went well. Since repayment started on the 8th of Oct., there hasn’t been any default. They have had 100% repayment. It is because they have in place a very good credit methodology that encourages clients to pay on time.
  • This cycle ends on the February 4, 2009. And all clients who successfully complete this cycle with good credit history will move to the next cycle with an express aim of accessing another loan from EMPLOY with an amount higher than the 70 USD.

Blankets for China

Last May, an earthquake killed over 50,000 people and left man more homeless. Save the Children says that, "3 million infants, children and teens have been among the worst affected". This was a disaster of immense proportions. School buildings, orphanages and small village towns were completely destroyed along with hospitals and office buildings.

As you can imagine, recovering from a disaster that destroys EVERYTHING you own is not easy. However, if you are living at or below the poverty level . . .it becomes nearly impossible. Today, many children and families remain homeless. Many others are left without basic necessities. And, It’s getting colder by the day. Winter is fast approaching with overnight temps already at freezing. Children remain without blankets.

As you tuck your children into bed covered up with multiple blankets in a home that has heat, can you remember these children?  Kids Lake (www.kidslake.org)  along with Global is teaming up to help raise funds for blankets.

1/7/09 Update:
There are many children in the village who are much warmer now because of the new quilts. Notice the housing/tents in the background of photos. This is what they are living in, in below freezing temperatures. Most have not been able to begin rebuilding yet, probably due to lack of funds. They were all very appreciative. Kids lake partnering with Global has raised$1,500.  Thank-you for participating in this cause.
