OUR
MISSION IN LIBERIA, WEST AFRICA
We
are committed to helping special needs children in Liberia reach their
full potential and affirm their God-given qualities through love,
support, care, and training.
The
general African perception of people with disabilities especially those
born with special needs, are very different than people in
America. Their perception is superstitious and deep rooted in
spiritism. Many Liberians believe that if a child is born with
a disability they will bring a curse on the whole family or
village. This includes beliefs such as if a woman has twins
that one of those babies were conceived by an evil spirit, and because
they do not know which of the babies is evil, they let both babies die.
Another example of the superstitious culture is when a woman dies in
child birth, they believe that the child is evil and must be left to
die as well. Many children with disabilities such as down-syndrome,
caustic ingestion, developmental delays, cerebral palsy, and
deformities are left by their families to die. This happens
deep in the bush as well as in the highly populated cities.
These babies often require early medical intervention and even if they
are not left to die, most parents do not understand what type of care
is needed and are unable to provide the necessary care. Forget
Me Not Children's Home is an orphanage that will be
organized by many post-adoptive families and volunteers across the US,
who sees the desperate need to help these children. Many of
these families already have a special needs child in their home and
have grown to love these children and understand there is such a great
purpose for these children. We cannot sit by and let these
children continue to go unloved and unwanted. Each of these
children deserves to have a life filled with the loving care of those
around them that understand the beauty of their special purpose.
