HISTORY:

The general African perception of people with disabilities especially those born with special needs, are very different than people in America.  Their perception is superstitious and deep rooted in spirits.
Some Liberians believe that if a child is born with a disability they will bring a curse on the whole family or village.  Many children with disabilities such as down syndrome, caustic ingestion, developmental delays, cerebral palsy, and deformities are left by their families to die.  This happens deep in the bush as well as in the highly populated cities and many times they are abandoned at hospitals.  These children often require early medical intervention and even if they are not left to die, most parents do not understand what type of care is needed and are unable to provide the necessary care.

MISSION:
Forget Me Not Children's Homes are foster homes in Liberia for handicap children. Due to the high unemployment rate -85%- this program allows for a woman who is not working to gain small employment as a foster parent. The child benefits from the one on one care that would be provided in this type of setting along with special therapies for them.  We are also educating the communities about handicap children who have as much potential and as any child.  We cannot sit by and let these children continue to go unloved and unwanted.  Each of these children deserves to have a life filled with the loving care of those around them that understand the beauty of their special purpose.

The most exciting part of this program is the development of the first and long-term care, special needs foster homes in Liberia.  The foster homes will be developed to help these children become the best they can be.  We don't just want to keep the children alive, we want them to be able to have the opportunity to fulfill God's special plan for their lives.

Long-term care:
Each of the children in the foster homes will receive (based upon their abilities and development):
  1. Ongoing medical care and therapies
  2. Daily physical therapy and/or exercise
  3. Academic education
  4. Biblical education
  5. Sponsor family
  6. Workplace training/education (as they come of age)
  7. Transition into long term facility for children over 18 who are unable to have training/education

Medical assistance:

Although there is obvious need for medical assistance for these children, most children with special needs continue to go uncared for. We are partnering with doctors, nurses, and caregivers to meet these needs by setting up a medical assistance program for these children in long term care. We will also open this up to the public as we reach out to help families who are currently caring for their handicap child and need some assistance or support.

This care will not come easily or cheap. Some of these children will need daily medical care and some weekly medical care. All will need continual monitoring and check-ups. We will be working to get donations from hospitals, individuals, and general care facilities from the U.S. or other countries.

Education:
Educating the people of Liberia about the uniqueness of children with special needs is a must and that children with disabilities bring a whole new perspective to life, living, and love is an important goal for Global Orphan Outreach.  The Bible is clear about caring for the orphans and widows, and loving the less fortunate around us.  This does not become void because of the social and economical conditions in Liberia. By reaching out through workshops and other community events, we hope to bring a whole new perspective to special needs children and their value to the Liberian society.
